Troost-Ekong Denies Super Eagles Boycott Over Bonus Demands

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has debunked media reports claiming that the Nigerian national team boycotted training in Morocco over demands for special bonuses.

He clarified that the players’ protest was strictly about unpaid allowances and bonuses owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In a statement posted on his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the PAOK defender dismissed suggestions that the team was pushing for additional payments ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers.

“Once resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement, claim, or *especially* demands other than the rightful request written about below is FALSE,” Troost-Ekong wrote.

“All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead.”

His clarification came after several media outlets reported that the players had refused to train in Rabat, Morocco, allegedly due to a dispute over bonus demands.

However, reliable sources within the team confirmed that the standoff stemmed from unpaid match allowances and qualification bonuses — including those earned for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification and the ongoing 2026 World Cup playoff campaign.

The misunderstanding reportedly led to the Super Eagles skipping their Tuesday evening training session as a form of protest against the NFF’s delay in settling their entitlements.

Nigeria is set to face Gabon on Thursday in the semi-final of the World Cup African playoffs.

The winner will move on to the final round to battle either Congo DR or Cameroon for a place in the intercontinental playoff — a decisive step toward securing a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

As the situation unfolds, fans and analysts have called on the NFF to swiftly resolve the financial issues to keep the team focused on the crucial fixtures ahead.
