Toke Makinwa Claims Men Are the “Real Gold Diggers” in Today’s Relationships

Media personality and style icon Toke Makinwa has ignited a new national conversation on gender roles, marriage, and financial expectations—this time turning the lens on men.

In the latest episode of her podcast, Makinwa challenged the long-held stereotype that women are the primary seekers of wealth in romantic relationships.

Speaking candidly, she criticised how society uses the “gold digger” label almost exclusively against women while ignoring the growing trend of men intentionally pursuing wealthy partners.

“People keep attacking women for knowing what they want,” she said. “Men sit on podcasts and claim women date for money, but the truth is the other gender are the biggest gold diggers.”

According to Makinwa, many men deliberately target women from affluent families—marrying into generational wealth with confidence and without facing the social backlash women often endure.

“They marry into old money, and they do it proudly,” she added.

Despite her strong position, Makinwa clarified that she has no issue with anyone—male or female—choosing marriage for financial stability. She noted that money has always played a role in marriage decisions.

“I don’t hate on them. Financial security has always been part of choosing a partner,” she said.

To drive her point home, she revealed that she would give the same practical advice to her own sibling.

“If my brother came to me with two women and wanted to know who to marry, I’d tell him to choose the one with a strong financial background.”
