Tobi Amusan easily won the women’s 100-meter hurdles event, setting a new world record and becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship.

Tobi Amusan believed she broke her own world record in what was unquestionably the best individual performance in women’s track and field, just over an hour after breaking Kendra Harrison’s six-year-old world record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles semifinal with a timing of 12.12 seconds.

For the first time in her career, Amusan competed for international recognition in the final against fierce opponents Brittany Anderson and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn. The hurdler finished the race in 12.06 seconds, however her time does not qualify as a new world record because of the excessive wind speed of 2.5 m/s. She barely missed out on bronze at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but that didn’t stop her from winning gold in the competition. Additionally, she was the first Nigerian to win a gold medal in the World Athletics Championship.

At the World Athletics Championship, Nigeria saved its best for last, as Ese Brume, not to be outdone, won the silver medal in the women’s long jump with a leap of 7.02 meters. With her third leap, the Olympic bronze medalist was the first to surpass the 7.00m mark; however, Malaika Mihambo of Germany overtook her with an incredible 7.12m leap to win the gold medal. Ruth Usoro’s 6.52-meter leap placed her in eleventh position.

In order to improve on this performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Nigerian competitors will now go to the United Kingdom.
