The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has boldly predicted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will control at least 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states before the next general elections in 2027.
Idris made the statement while addressing journalists in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday, during a working visit alongside his counterpart from the Ministry of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari.
According to the Minister, the APC’s policies and performance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have generated strong interest across party lines, with many opposition politicians already making moves to defect to the ruling party.
“Today we have 24 APC governors. From the way things are going, by next year, we will have not less than 30 states under the APC,” Idris said.
“You can see governors from other parties working closely with Mr. President. They are joining the Renewed Hope Agenda because it is working.”
A Wave of Defections Expected
The Minister’s comments follow recent signs of political realignment across the country, especially from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Several state governors and high-profile politicians are reportedly in talks with the APC leadership, signaling what many analysts describe as a strategic shift ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Though Idris did not name specific individuals, his remarks appear to confirm growing speculation about potential defections in states like Enugu, Delta, and Bayelsa.
Performance Driving Popularity – Idris
Minister Idris credited the surge in support to Tinubu’s governance model, describing it as results-oriented and inclusive.
“There is no discrimination. The President is reaching out to everyone regardless of political party,” he said.
“People are seeing the renewed hope working. There is hope for Nigeria, and that hope is under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

He cited ongoing reforms in agriculture, infrastructure, and national orientation campaigns as examples of the administration’s achievements, adding that even critics are beginning to acknowledge progress.
Opposition Under Pressure
The statement comes amid growing concern within the opposition camp, especially the PDP, which has continued to face internal crises and high-profile defections since the 2023 general elections.
While PDP spokespersons have downplayed the impact of recent losses, political watchers say the party may need urgent reforms to remain competitive in 2027.
As Nigeria moves toward the 2027 election cycle, the political chessboard is shifting.
Whether APC can secure the 30-state target remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the race has already begun, and the battle for political realignment is well underway.
