Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has conveyed his condolences to British boxing star Anthony Joshua after a fatal road accident in south-west Nigeria claimed the lives of two members of the boxer’s inner circle.
According to reports, the accident occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State while Joshua was travelling with friends who had joined him in Nigeria to celebrate the New Year with family. The crash resulted in the deaths of two men identified as Latif, widely known as Latz, and Sina.
Latif was Joshua’s personal trainer, while Sina served as his strength and conditioning coach. Both were seated in the front of the vehicle at the time of the incident and were confirmed dead at the scene. Joshua, who was in the back seat, survived the crash but sustained injuries.
In a statement issued on Monday, President Tinubu described the incident as deeply tragic and expressed solidarity with the boxer and his family during the difficult time. He acknowledged Joshua’s resilience and lauded his positive influence as an athlete who continues to bring pride to Nigeria.
The president noted that the loss of life has cast a sombre mood over the season and urged unity and compassion in moments of grief. He offered prayers for Joshua’s swift recovery and asked for divine comfort for the families of the deceased, while also praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.
