Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 election, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, blaming the federal government for what he described as a dangerous failure to confront growing insecurity.
Reacting to reports surrounding the alleged abduction of worshippers from a church in Kaduna State, Obi said the recurring nature of such incidents—whether officially confirmed or denied—points to a much larger national crisis.
The former Anambra State governor argued that the steady flow of reports about kidnappings and violent attacks reflects a breakdown in leadership, safety, and national cohesion.
He noted that insecurity is no longer isolated to one region, citing recent attacks and abductions in states including Benue, Zamfara, Kano, Niger, and Plateau.
According to him, the scale and frequency of these incidents are alarming, especially for a country that is not officially at war.
Obi also took a swipe at the administration of President Bola Tinubu, criticizing reports that the government spent millions of dollars on foreign lobbying and image management.
He questioned why resources could be mobilized for international public relations while communities across the country remain vulnerable to violent attacks.
Commenting on the conflicting narratives surrounding the Kaduna incident, Obi said the constant cycle of mass abduction claims followed by disputed figures and official denials has become unsettling for citizens who live in daily fear. He stressed that even unverified reports should prompt serious reflection and urgent action from those in power.
In a message of solidarity, Obi addressed residents of Kaduna and families affected by the alleged abductions, assuring them they were not alone. He offered prayers for the safe return of anyone taken and for the speedy recovery of those injured.
He added that if the reports turn out to be inaccurate, it would still underscore the level of anxiety and mistrust that insecurity has bred nationwide.

Obi concluded by calling on the government to place the protection of lives and property at the center of its priorities, insisting that Nigeria deserves leadership that treats human life as sacred. Reiterating his long-standing slogan, he said the moment to confront insecurity decisively is now, adding, “A New Nigeria is possible.”
