The 2022 Maltina Teacher of the Year Award competition starts.

The Nigerian Breweries Plc said on Thursday in Lagos that entries for the Maltina-Teacher-of-the-Year award for this year are now being accepted.

Similar to previous editions, the yearly award with this year’s edition, the eighth series, aims to discover the greatest and most excellent teachers in both public and private secondary schools around the country for opulent recognition and celebration.

At a press conference, Mr. Uaboi Agbebaku, the Company Secretary/Legal Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, the competition’s organizer and sponsor, announced the start of the event. He said that the eight-year-old initiative has had a significant impact on educators in general and on the teaching profession in particular.

He claims that the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, the social arm of Nigerian Breweries, is the venue through which the Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year award was developed. Participating teachers are invited to submit entries voluntarily and at no cost.

Mr. Agbebaku clarified that, similar to prior winners, the grand prize for the competition was N6.5 million, along with a plaque and certificate.

He clarified that on the day of the award ceremony in October, when the grand winner would be unveiled, they would receive N1 million as a national champion and an additional N500,000 as a state champion. In addition, they would receive N1 million annually for the following five years, as long as they continue to be teachers.

The individual would also be eligible for an all-expenses-paid short training course abroad, he continued, and his or her school would receive a block of six classrooms or another project of priority for producing him or her. The individual must be certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

Mr. Agbebaku added that the other state champions would receive N500,000 apiece, bringing the total cash prize of the award to several million. The first and second runners-up would receive N1 million and N750,000, respectively, plus another N500,000 as champions from their respective states.

He stated that since the competition’s launch countrywide, no fewer than 181 teachers had received rewards, and organizers anticipated greater participation this year.

He stated that from this Thursday, July 22, to the closing date of July 22, interested teachers could begin submitting their entries either physically or electronically via the special website www.maltinateacheroftheyear.com.

In their respective remarks, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) representative, Mr. Akintoye Hassan, the chairman of the union’s Lagos chapter, and the Registrar of TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, spoke on behalf of the council’s Lagos Coordinator, Mrs. Adaobi Ekwuno, and the initiative’s benefits for teachers and the nation’s teaching profession.

Both of them urged other businesses to follow Nigeria Breweries Plc’s lead and make sizeable investments in the country’s educational system in order to lift Nigeria and its people out of poverty.

Ajiboye continued, “The best way for any nation to achieve economic greatness is to invest in human capital.”

The current champion and design technology teacher at James Hope Royal College in Agbor, Delta State, Mr. Taye Abanika, shared his testimonial during the event via a digital platform. He thanked Nigerian Breweries for the initiative, stating that the award has added great values to the teaching profession and society at large, in addition to the winners themselves.

According to him, teaching is more about having a great love for people and emotional stability to share knowledge despite difficulties than it is about making a career.
