Terrorist Threatens to Bomb Nigeria’s National Assembly: Reps Sound Alarm

Decomposed Body Discovered At National Assembly Annex Raises Security Alarms

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Internal Security has disclosed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The revelation was made during a public hearing on Tuesday for a proposed bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment and Functions of the Legislative Security Directorate in the National Assembly (HB 1632).”

According to the committee chairman, Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, the legislature has faced a range of security challenges recently — including car and motorcycle thefts, vandalism, infiltration by persons using fake identity cards and unauthorised visitor access.

“Our intelligence indicates threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex, and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” the lawmaker stated.

He warned that without urgent action, legislative business could be disrupted: “If activities are thwarted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no annual budget, no plenary at all — and that will destabilise legislative procedure, democracy and the nation at large.”

In response, lawmakers advocated for the swift creation and implementation of the Legislative Security Directorate, which would set qualifications and standards for the Sergeant-at-Arms and other security personnel at the National Assembly, and integrate best practices for legislative security.

They also urged that state Houses of Assembly across Nigeria replicate similar security frameworks, citing the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions amid rising security threats.
