The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded more than 75 percent of results from the ongoing Anambra governorship election to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), even as reports emerged of a fatal shooting in Orumba South Local Government Area.
According to local sources, a serving councillor was gunned down on Saturday morning at Owerre Ezukala Ward 1, Orumba South LGA, while attempting to cast his vote. Witnesses said the assailants stormed the polling unit and opened fire, killing the councillor on the spot before fleeing the scene.
A resident, identified as Iyke Orji, told *Daily Post* that the attack caused panic among voters in the area. “The gunmen came suddenly and shot a top political figure. The councillor for Owerre Ezukala was hit and died instantly,” Orji recounted.
However, the Anambra State Police Command has denied receiving any official report of the incident. The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the election exercise across the state had remained largely peaceful.
He stated, “There is no report of violence before me at this time. The atmosphere in Anambra has been calm and the election process is going on smoothly.”
Meanwhile, INEC’s data on the IReV platform shows that over 75 percent of results from polling units across the state have been successfully uploaded. The commission has continued to urge stakeholders and the public to rely on official updates as collation and verification continue.
Security agencies have been placed on alert following reports of isolated disturbances in some parts of the state.
