Nigeria’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector showed remarkable progress in 2018, with increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and a rise in active telecom subscribers. According to the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, FDI grew from $32 billion in 2015 to $40 billion by 2018. The number of telecom subscribers also increased from 148.7 million in August 2015 to 162.05 million by September 2018, while teledensity rose to 115.76%. The country surpassed its 30% broadband penetration target, reaching 31% by December 2018.
Despite these achievements, industry experts are concerned about the future, citing gaps that need to be addressed for sustained growth. Practitioners like Chris Uwaje and Jimson Olufuye highlighted the need for stronger sub-sector support and a more unified advocacy environment to prepare for the challenges of a fast-evolving technological landscape.
Looking ahead to 2019 and beyond, industry leaders, including Engr. Gbenga Adebayo and Dr. Bayero Agabi, emphasized the importance of rethinking ICT advocacy and adopting forward-thinking strategies to maintain Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global digital economy. Without these efforts, the nation may struggle to adapt to the disruptive changes looming in the future.
