Super Eagles Mourn Former Coach Festus Onigbinde

Nigeria’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles, has paid tribute to former head coach Festus Onigbinde, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

The family described the late coach as “a respected football figure and community leader,” offering prayers for his peaceful rest.

Super Eagles pay tribute

In a condolence message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Super Eagles honoured Onigbinde’s contribution to Nigerian football.

“We commiserate with the family of our former coach, Festus Adegboyega Onigbinde, following his passing. A respected leader and a true servant of Nigerian football. Rest in peace, Coach,” the team wrote.

A distinguished coaching career

Onigbinde first managed Nigeria’s national team — then known as the Green Eagles — between 1982 and 1984, leading the side to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria finished as runners-up after losing 3–1 to Cameroon national football team in the final.

He returned to the national team in 2002, replacing the late Shuaibu Amodu, and guided Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup hosted by Japan and South Korea.

At the tournament, Nigeria exited in the group stage after defeats to Argentina national football team and Sweden national football team, along with a draw against England national football team.

Legacy in football development

Beyond his coaching career, Onigbinde remained active in football development and administration. He later served as a technical instructor for both the Confederation of African Football and FIFA.

His passing has been widely mourned across Nigeria’s football community, with many remembering him for his dedication to the growth of the game and his role in shaping the national team’s history.
