Afrobeats sensation Oludipe David, better known by his stage name Spyro, has shared deeply personal reflections on his upbringing, revealing the emotional hurdles he had to overcome on his path to stardom.
In a heart-to-heart conversation with media veteran Frank Edoho, the ‘Who Is Your Guy’ singer peeled back the curtain on a troubled childhood marked by emotional strain and fear, much of which, he says, was rooted in the parenting style of his father.
“My dad was very strict,” Spyro admitted, “but more than that, he often used words that stuck with me in all the wrong ways. He never missed a chance to tell me I was a failure.”
Those harsh words, he explained, slowly took root in his mind, shaping his self-perception through his formative years. “I started to believe it. I thought I was destined to fail. At one point, I truly believed I would die broke.”
The burden of those internalized fears nearly derailed his music journey. With dreams of making it as an artist slipping away, Spyro said he found himself pivoting to interior design, uncertain if music was still his calling.
But everything changed in 2022.
His breakthrough hit ‘Who Is Your Guy’ exploded across Nigerian airwaves and social media, becoming an anthem of friendship and loyalty.
The remix, featuring Afrobeat queen Tiwa Savage, released in 2023, propelled him even further into the limelight and firmly cemented his place in the music industry.

Despite the glitz and fame that followed, Spyro revealed that it wasn’t just luck or virality that turned things around—it was faith.
“I overcame the fear of failure after I built a personal relationship with God. That’s what saved me,” he said.
From nearly quitting music to becoming one of Nigeria’s most celebrated breakout stars, Spyro’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience—and the healing power of faith, self-belief, and second chances.
