Spotify has begun rolling out a major update to its Android Auto app, delivering a refreshed user interface and powerful new features designed to make driving and music listening more engaging, especially for groups on the go.
Among the standout additions is “Jam,” a collaborative listening feature that enables drivers to host group sessions from their vehicle’s display. Initially teased at Google I/O 2025, Jam officially debuts with Spotify version 9.0.58.596 for Android, offering a dynamic way for road trip companions to build playlists together in real time.
Group Sessions Made Easy with “Jam”
With the new Jam feature, Spotify transforms the way users enjoy music on the road. Drivers can initiate a shared listening session via Android Auto, which generates a QR code directly on the car’s infotainment screen. Passengers simply scan the code using their smartphones to join the session and start adding songs to the queue.
While guests contribute to the playlist, the driver remains in control—able to manage the queue and remove participants if needed. According to Spotify, this update “makes collaborative listening seamless while on the move,” turning passive passengers into active DJs without distracting the driver.
Improved Offline Playback for Low-Connectivity Areas
In addition to Jam, Spotify’s update tackles one of the biggest frustrations for drivers—poor mobile network coverage. To help users stay connected to their music even when the signal drops, the app now includes a dedicated “Downloaded” tab in the Library section. This gives users quick access to songs and playlists already saved on their devices.
Spotify also marks downloaded content with a visible icon while browsing, ensuring drivers can instantly recognize which tracks are available without internet access. This update greatly improves the offline music experience, especially in remote or rural areas.
Smarter In-Car Search with Floating Button
Spotify’s new update also introduces a floating Search button, a long-requested feature that finally lets Android Auto users manually browse music within the app.
Previously, searching for songs required the use of Google Assistant, which would auto-play the top result without offering a list of options. Now, users can tap the Search button, explore suggestions, and make more intentional listening choices—mirroring the flexibility of Spotify’s mobile interface.
User Interface Gets a Safety-Focused Makeover
Beyond new features, Spotify has overhauled the app’s interface to prioritize ease of use and safer navigation. Menus, icons, and controls are now more intuitive and responsive, making it easier to manage music without losing focus on the road.
