Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has ignited intense debate across social media after alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is unwell following his recent trip out of Nigeria.
Sowore made the claim shortly after the President departed the country for Europe on Sunday, further alleging that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is seriously ill. He questioned why, in his view, Nigeria continues to be governed by leaders he described as medically unfit.
Controversial Social Media Post
In a post shared via his verified social media platforms, Sowore criticised Nigeria’s political leadership, accusing public office holders of relying on the nation as a safety net for their healthcare needs.
He wrote: “Bola Ahmed Tinubu is unwell and barely managing himself, which explains why he was abruptly flown to Europe today. Senator Godswill Akpabio is practically dying. Why is Nigeria governed by sick people? While there is nothing wrong with illness, it is heartless to use an entire country as health insurance for leaders.”
The remarks quickly went viral, drawing both support and condemnation from Nigerians online. While some users echoed Sowore’s concerns and called for openness about the health status of public officials, others criticised him for making unverified claims and urged restraint in public commentary.

Presidency Clarifies President’s Travel
Earlier on Sunday, the Presidency had officially announced President Tinubu’s departure, describing it as part of his end-of-year vacation and preparations for an upcoming international engagement.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, President Tinubu travelled to Europe and will subsequently proceed to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The President is scheduled to attend the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Summit at the invitation of UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The high-level event, slated for early January, brings together global leaders from government, business, and civil society to discuss sustainable development.
Onanuga noted that President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the conclusion of the summit.
Public Reaction Remains Divided
Sowore’s comments continue to dominate online discussions, with Nigerians sharply divided over the issue. While some insist that public office holders should be transparent about their health, others warn against spreading unsubstantiated claims that could inflame public sentiment.
