Sowore Escorts NYSC Corps Member Summoned Over Viral Video

Sowore Escorts NYSC Corps Member

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has stepped in to support Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who was summoned by the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) after her viral TikTok video criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The video, which gained widespread attention, featured Uguamaye lamenting the rising cost of living in Nigeria and expressing frustration over the hardship young people face. In her emotional plea, she questioned the government’s handling of inflation and economic policies, saying,

“Tinubu, you are a terrible person. What are you doing to help our economy?”

Following the video’s release, Uguamaye reportedly received threats and was instructed to appear before the NYSC authorities for questioning. In response, Sowore, along with legal representatives, escorted her to the NYSC office, vowing to protect her right to freedom of expression.

Speaking on the matter, Sowore stated,

“The journey with youth corper Ushie Rita Uguamaye has commenced in Lagos. She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today, and we will ensure she is not intimidated for speaking the truth.”

The incident has sparked public debate on free speech in Nigeria, with critics arguing that the government is increasingly silencing dissenting voices.

While some have condemned Uguamaye’s remarks as inappropriate for a public servant, others defend her right to criticize government policies affecting her daily life.

As of now, the NYSC has not issued an official statement regarding the summons.

However, activists and civil rights groups are closely monitoring the situation, urging authorities to respect Uguamaye’s rights and avoid setting a precedent that discourages young Nigerians from speaking out on national issues.
