First Lady Oluremi “Remi” Tinubu has raised more than ₦20 billion so far toward completing the long-stalled National Library Headquarters in Abuja.
The funds come via her “Oluremi @ 65 Education Fund,” an initiative launched in lieu of a lavish birthday celebration.
Speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Remi Tinubu explained that instead of birthday cakes, cards, and greeting ads, she asked well-wishers to convert their gifts into donations for the library project, an endeavor she deeply cares about.
The National Library, whose construction began during the Shehu Shagari administration, has suffered delays for decades despite government promises.
Remi Tinubu lamented that past efforts—even during her time as a senator on the Senate Committee on Education—were unable to get the project completed.
She emphasised that the effort is not tied to any political agenda or the upcoming 2027 elections but is driven by her passion for education, knowledge, and nurturing young Nigerians.
Remi Tinubu disclosed that the fundraiser will remain open until December 2025, coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education and using a dedicated Zenith Bank account.

Amid the laudatory response, critics have voiced concerns. The ADC (African Democratic Congress) has warned that such national infrastructure should fall under the government’s constitutional duties—not be dependent on private campaigns or personal philanthropy.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi also criticised the initiative, saying it highlights a failure of leadership when education infrastructure depends on birthday fundraisers.
