In a decisive move to strengthen the nation’s internal security framework, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency concerning Nigeria’s security training institutions.
The directive targets the urgent overhaul of facilities used by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies, which the President described as outdated and insufficient for contemporary security demands.
According to the President, the dilapidated condition of these training centers poses a serious challenge to the effectiveness and professionalism of security personnel.
Tinubu emphasized that modern, well-equipped institutions are essential to ensure that officers are adequately prepared to serve with competence, integrity, and respect for human rights.
The announcement was made public by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who currently chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc Committee tasked with revamping the nation’s security training institutions.
Governor Mbah, speaking during an on-site inspection of security training facilities in Lagos, highlighted that the committee has been given a 30-day timeline to conduct a thorough evaluation and submit a comprehensive report to the NEC for subsequent action.
Governor Mbah was accompanied on the inspection by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Committee Secretary and former Inspector General of Police Alkali Usman Baba, as well as Assistant Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, who oversees the Special Protection Unit (SPU).
The team assessed multiple facilities, identifying key areas requiring urgent upgrades to meet modern standards.
President Tinubu’s directive reflects his broader vision for national development, linking robust internal security structures with economic growth.
According to Governor Mbah, the President is concerned that the current state of training institutions undermines efforts to produce security personnel capable of upholding human dignity while fostering a safe environment for citizens.
He further stressed that modernized security training aligns with the President’s ambition of transforming Nigeria into a trillion-dollar economy within the next five years.
