Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, has dismissed former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as politically insignificant.
In a strongly worded statement titled “Imprisoned by ambition: Welcome to 2027, Peter Obi’s reckless misreading of politics and power,” Dare argued that Obi’s departure from the Labour Party (LP) would not alter Nigeria’s political dynamics in any meaningful way.
According to him, the defection failed to generate excitement or momentum, as many Nigerians viewed it as a predictable political maneuver rather than a bold new strategy.
Dare suggested that Obi’s shift to the ADC represents a continuation of an old political script, not a reinvention. He described Obi’s messaging as repetitive and uninspiring, insisting that the move signals the exhaustion of a political approach that has already run its course.
The presidential aide also accused Obi of using the announcement to once again criticise President Tinubu, whom he portrayed as far more grounded in political influence, experience, and legacy. Dare contrasted Tinubu’s leadership style—anchored on governance and policy implementation—with what he characterised as Obi’s reliance on populist rhetoric and public commentary.
Further questioning Obi’s national appeal, Dare argued that the former Anambra State governor lacks the broad-based democratic structure and inclusive political coalition required to mount a serious presidential challenge. He maintained that Obi’s ambitions appear driven more by personal conviction than by the complex realities of Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.

Overall, Dare concluded that Obi’s defection neither reshapes the opposition nor presents a credible alternative ahead of future elections, insisting that it was met more with public apathy than political anticipation.
