According to the Mueller report released on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump reacted with dismay when informed that a special counsel had been appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election. On May 17, 2017, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions informed Trump of the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller.
Upon hearing the news, Trump reportedly slumped back in his chair and said, “Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I’m fucked.” The report notes that Trump became visibly angry with Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation, asking, “How could you let this happen, Jeff?”
Trump expressed concern that the appointment of a special counsel would derail his presidency, stating, “Everyone tells me if you get one of these independent counsels it ruins your presidency. It takes years and years, and I won’t be able to do anything. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
The report also highlighted several instances where Trump sought to have Mueller removed from his role as special counsel.
