Labour Issues Ultimatum: Buhari Given May 1 Deadline on Minimum Wage

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has set a deadline for the signing of the Minimum Wage Bill. Speaking in Abuja on Saturday during an interview with journalists, Wabba emphasized that workers expect President Buhari to sign the bill by May 1st, after completing the necessary procedures. He reiterated that the expectation of workers is clear, and they are hopeful that the new wage will be implemented in time for Workers’ Day.

Wabba noted that workers have fought hard to reach this point and are continuing to engage in the process. He stressed the importance of having a clear timeline for when workers can begin receiving the new minimum wage, citing the increasing economic hardship faced by those on fixed incomes.

Addressing rumors of a potential fuel price increase, Wabba expressed concern over the negative impact this would have on Nigerians, who he said are already impoverished. He questioned the validity of the fuel subsidy, referencing President Buhari’s stance that subsidies are linked to corruption. Wabba also pointed out ongoing inefficiencies in the country’s crude oil production and currency management, which he said continue to burden the economy.
