Former President Goodluck Jonathan has the upper hand in the 2023 presidential election in terms of popular support in the North and most streets across the country. Of course, there is ample data to support this assumption.
There is no denying that the intrigues surrounding the 2023 presidency are becoming more strong among political leaders in the country by the day. As we get closer, more revelations emerge.
According to private information from people close to the Northern Governors Forum, no less than ten governors of Northern extraction have vowed to mobilise the region in favor of Jonathan’s candidacy for the president in 2023.
They have also pledged to expand their campaign to include their colleagues in the South in order to ensure Jonathan’s widespread acceptance and support.
This information was given to reporters via a person who was purportedly aware of the governors’ clever plot.
The most recent political development in the country has validated my position, which I have shared with many of my brothers and colleagues in the north. The current silent violent movements in the North in support of ex-President Jonathan.
At a recent meeting at the palace of a prominent monarch in the North, a trustworthy source cited an influential North-East state governor and another from the North-Central as saying, “We have adopted a position. This decision and actions have become vital in the interest of fairness and justice.”
In this perspective, fairness entails not only shifting power to the South, but also to the South-South, because the country requires the former president at this vital juncture.
Furthermore, the country is on a precipice in terms of peace and security. We cannot pretend otherwise, and as leaders, we must fight to restore the country’s peace, security, and unity via purposeful efforts.
Furthermore, there is a belief that Jonathan’s project has been factored into the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress’s National Convention, which has been postponed several times as the party searches for a national chairman who will make Jonathan’s candidacy run smoothly.
A strategy has also been developed to guarantee that the presidential ambitions of other notable candidates are set aside or thwarted.
The plans will be implemented step by step over the next few weeks until everyone, particularly political, traditional, and religious thinking leaders across the country, is on board.
But why are the governors vying for Jonathan when there are other viable candidates? What influenced such a decisive stance?
The position is based on power theory and the former president’s role in the North’s goal. The North sees Jonathan as a natural ally who can be trusted with authority. It is extremely dangerous to place power in the hands of a desperate individual.
This is one of the characteristics that Northern power brokers have identified as the excessive ambition of people who have been running around in circles to gain power at whatever cost.
The second point is similar to the first in terms of attribute: trust. Who is an ally? Simply put, an ally is someone who can be trusted because he adheres to a prior mutual agreement or understanding. In this setting, and in the eyes of those who support the former president, Jonathan is the only person who can be trusted with authority. He’s been tested, proven, and certified.
This is where the North has established its position, and it will not back down from it.
The North is aware that some readings imply that it is pursuing an agenda. I agree, and my position is quite straightforward. Before we can discuss any other motives, we must first ensure that Nigeria is stable and peaceful.
In this situation, the motive or agenda is to maintain the country as the primary focus. In other words, we must all make sacrifices in order to advance the national interest. We cannot continue to believe that going our separate ways will benefit us. It’s a fool’s paradise to have such hallucinations. But, with Jonathan as the next president, we can come together as a country and engage in productive dialogue in a peaceful and tranquil environment. Indeed, Jonathan represents the next step for our country.
