FG to Construct 77,400 Homes Nationwide Under Renewed Hope Housing Scheme

The Federal Government has announced plans to construct 100 housing units in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, marking a bold move to reduce the country’s housing shortfall and provide affordable homes to underserved populations.

This ambitious plan falls under the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, a flagship project of President Bola Tinubu’s administration aimed at delivering accessible, inclusive, and decent housing for Nigerians—particularly low-income earners and vulnerable groups who have long been excluded from formal housing markets.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, made this known during a meeting with a delegation from Creative Sphere Limited at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. His remarks were confirmed in an official statement issued by Salisu Badamasi Haiba, Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry.

100 Homes in Every Local Government—A One-Year Target

At the heart of the initiative is the construction of 100 housing units in each of the 774 local government areas across the country, adding up to 77,400 new homes. The government plans to complete the project within one year.

“This visionary programme demonstrates President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of status, has access to safe and decent housing. It reflects his passion for a better, more inclusive Nigeria,” Dangiwa declared.

He explained that the housing units would not just serve as shelters but would be accompanied by vital social infrastructure, including primary schools, clinics, police outposts, recreational areas, and shopping malls, transforming them into livable, functional communities.

Financing Through Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund

The project will receive funding from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF), a strategic financing mechanism created to back nationwide infrastructure and housing development. The fund will support the construction, provision of amenities, and delivery of homes that meet the needs of diverse socio-economic groups.

Affordable Payment Plan and Free Housing for the Vulnerable

To ensure the homes remain truly affordable, Dangiwa outlined a payment model that allows prospective homeowners to pay one-third of their monthly income toward owning a unit. “A Nigerian earning N30,000 monthly can become a homeowner by paying just N10,000 monthly,” the minister explained.

Furthermore, 20% of the homes will be allocated at no cost to Nigerians with little or no income, such as widows, orphans, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and others in need. This social protection element aims to ensure that even the most disadvantaged citizens have a place to call home.

A Broader Housing Vision: Cities and Estates

The Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme represents one of three components of the broader Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, which also includes the Renewed Hope Cities and Renewed Hope Housing Estates.

The Minister revealed that Renewed Hope Cities are already under development in seven strategic locations representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones: Abuja, Lagos, Rivers, Enugu, Kano, Nasarawa, and Maiduguri. These projects, designed as modern urban centers, are being implemented through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to leverage private sector expertise and investment.

In addition to the local government housing programme, the federal government plans to construct 250 housing units in two capital cities from each of the six geopolitical zones—resulting in a total of twelve cities under the Renewed Hope Estates scheme. These projects will receive direct financing through the national budget, with plans for broader expansion in the near future.

Promoting Real Estate Innovation and Investment

During the meeting, the Minister also voiced his support for an upcoming initiative by Creative Sphere Limited—a Real Estate Innovation and Investment Carnival scheduled for later this year. He described the event as a timely opportunity to raise awareness about government housing efforts and stimulate private investment in the real estate sector.

Chairman of Creative Sphere Limited, Mr. Monday Ogedengbe, who led the delegation, stated that the carnival would serve as a nationwide platform to highlight the strategic role of real estate in national development. The event is expected to attract both local and international attention, promoting Nigeria as a viable destination for housing investment and innovation.

Building Toward Inclusive Development

As the housing deficit continues to pose economic and social challenges across Nigeria, the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative represents a comprehensive, scalable approach to bridging that gap. By targeting local governments and incorporating affordability, inclusivity, and infrastructure, the programme seeks to transform housing into a driver of sustainable development and national cohesion.

With President Tinubu expected to officially unveil the programme soon, attention now turns to execution, funding disbursement, and project monitoring. If successfully implemented, this initiative could significantly reshape Nigeria’s housing landscape—making homeownership a reality for millions and offering a blueprint for inclusive urban development in Africa.
