In just under two months, Lagos State will witness a significant leadership transition as Governor Akinwunmi Ambode hands over the reins to Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu on May 29. The incoming administration will inherit both accomplishments and challenges from the outgoing government, with critical issues awaiting immediate attention.
One pressing concern Sanwo-Olu will face is the escalating waste crisis in Lagos. Streets across the city are plagued with heaps of refuse, raising concerns about potential health hazards. The urgent task of clearing the city’s growing waste problem is expected to be one of Sanwo-Olu’s top priorities upon taking office.
In addition to the waste challenge, Lagos’ deteriorating road network will be another issue for the new administration. Many of the city’s roads are in dire condition, with some deteriorating during Ambode’s tenure. Road repairs are likely to be key in Sanwo-Olu’s strategy to win public support early in his tenure.
Another major concern is the increasing lawlessness of Okada riders and truck drivers, who have become a menace on Lagos roads. Okada riders frequently flout traffic rules, causing accidents and sometimes clashing with law enforcement officers. Lagos residents are calling for stricter regulations to address this growing issue, especially as the city looks to promote tourism and improve public safety.
Despite these challenges, Sanwo-Olu will inherit several monumental projects initiated by Ambode. Key infrastructure developments like the Oshodi Transport Interchange, Oshodi-Abule Egba Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and the 10-lane Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road are among the ongoing projects that will require continued focus. These initiatives, when completed, are expected to significantly enhance transportation and infrastructure in Lagos, leaving a lasting legacy for Ambode’s administration.
The $70 million Oshodi Transport Interchange, in particular, is a flagship project aimed at transforming Oshodi into a modern transport hub, shedding its notorious image and providing residents with world-class facilities. This ambitious project is expected to play a pivotal role in Sanwo-Olu’s drive to modernize Lagos and improve the quality of life for its residents.
