Police Explain Use of Tear Gas on #FreeNnamdiKanu Protesters in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the use of tear gas to disperse a group of protesters demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, during a demonstration in Abuja on Monday.

In a statement issued by the FCT Police Command, authorities said the protesters violated security protocols and posed a threat to public safety, prompting law enforcement officers to intervene with minimum force.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the protest had no prior notice submitted to the police, which is required under the Public Order Act. She stated that security agencies acted in line with established procedures to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the Federal Capital Territory.

“The protesters who assembled at the Unity Fountain proceeded without clearance, obstructing traffic and causing tension in the area. Police operatives deployed at strategic points had to take necessary steps, including the use of tear gas, to disperse the gathering,” the statement read.

She added that no fatalities were recorded, and the situation was brought under control swiftly, with normalcy returning to affected areas soon after.

The Protest

The protest was part of ongoing calls by supporters of Nnamdi Kanu for his unconditional release. Kanu, who was re-arrested in 2021 and has been facing charges related to treasonable felony and terrorism, remains in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Rule of Law

The FCT Police Command reiterated its respect for citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly but urged members of the public to always follow due process when planning demonstrations.

“The Command remains committed to the protection of lives and property while ensuring that the rights of citizens are balanced with the need for public safety and national security,” the police spokesperson added.

No arrests were confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
