Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed grave concerns over the increasing influx of illicit drugs into Nigeria, attributing the situation to corruption and regulatory failures within the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on October 28, 2025, Obi highlighted the alarming trend of drug traffickers exploiting courier and delivery services to smuggle narcotics into the country. He criticized the NDLEA for its inability to curb this growing menace, describing the agency as “a joke” due to its ineffective enforcement and oversight mechanisms.
Obi emphasized the detrimental impact of drug trafficking on Nigerian society, stating that it destroys families, fuels crime, and undermines the nation’s moral fabric. He warned that a country already grappling with insecurity, high youth unemployment, and widespread poverty cannot afford to normalize drug abuse.
The former Anambra State governor called for stronger institutional oversight and accountability, urging the Nigerian government to rebuild a system where laws are respected, leaders are held accountable, and justice prevails. He concluded by asserting that Nigeria’s healing process can only commence when character, truth, and responsibility are restored to governance.

Obi’s remarks underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within Nigeria’s drug enforcement agencies and a concerted effort to address the root causes of drug trafficking and abuse in the country.
