Peter Obi Blasts Government Over ₦7 Trillion Budget Scandal

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party stalwart, Peter Obi, has publicly condemned the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images bearing his likeness to promote commercial products online.

In a statement released on Friday, Obi warned that certain online advertisements are using digitally altered images to falsely suggest that he endorses specific products, without his knowledge or consent.

“I have not endorsed any product online or offline,” Obi stated. “It is disturbing to see AI-generated pictures of me being circulated in advertisements that I have absolutely nothing to do with.”

The former Anambra State governor described the trend as misleading and deceptive, urging the public to disregard any such content and remain vigilant against misinformation and digital impersonation.

Rising Concerns Over AI Misuse

This development adds to growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence in Nigeria’s digital space, particularly involving public figures.

Obi had previously refuted the authenticity of viral photos that falsely depicted him meeting with Lagos union leader MC Oluomo and former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing them as “fake and doctored.”

Similar incidents have also been reported involving other prominent Nigerians.

In June 2025, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was featured in a fabricated AI video ad promoting health supplements, prompting warnings from his media team and increased public scrutiny over AI-driven disinformation.

Call for Regulatory Action

Obi’s statement is expected to intensify calls for stronger regulation of AI-generated content and enforcement of digital rights.

He urged authorities to take immediate action to curb the rising trend of impersonation and AI-enabled scams, particularly on social media and digital advertising platforms.

As of the time of this report, no company or individual has been publicly identified as responsible for the ads featuring Obi’s likeness, and no official response has been issued by regulatory agencies such as the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON).
