Penalty Drama Ends Kenya’s African Nations Championship Journey as Madagascar Advance to Last Four

Kenya’s fairy-tale run at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to an agonizing end on Friday after Madagascar knocked them out 4-3 on penalties in Nairobi.

The gripping quarter-final contest ended 1-1 after extra time, but Madagascar held their composure during the shootout to secure a semi-final ticket, silencing a packed Kasarani Stadium.

Kenya’s Bright Start Crumbles

The hosts took control early in the second half when Alphonce Omija slotted home in the 48th minute. A second goal from Ryan Ogam was disallowed for offside, denying Kenya the chance to take firm command of the tie.

Madagascar fought back with determination, and in the 69th minute, midfielder Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa was brought down inside the area. Gilles Razafimaro equalized from the penalty spot, setting the stage for a tense finale.

The penalty shootout became the ultimate decider. While Omija missed from the spot, Toky Rakotondraibe scored Madagascar’s winning penalty, sparking wild celebrations for the islanders.

Co-Hosts Knocked Out in One Night

Adding to East Africa’s heartbreak, co-hosts Tanzania were also eliminated after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Morocco in Dar es Salaam. Oussama Lamlioui netted in the 65th minute, marking his fourth goal of the tournament and cementing his status as top scorer.

Frontpagenews.ng reports that the competition’s last-four stage will feature powerhouses Senegal, Algeria, and Morocco alongside Madagascar, setting up thrilling semi-final clashes across Kampala and Zanzibar.
