In a bold move that signals a major shake-up in Osun State’s political landscape, former Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election under the APC banner.
Speaking in Osogbo on Tuesday during a well-attended media briefing, Omisore described his ambition as a “rescue mission,” pledging to steer Osun State towards “structural reforms and progressive development” if elected.
“Running a government is not entertainment; it demands discipline, competence, and vision. It’s not a matter for jesters, but for serious-minded individuals,” Omisore stated, in a pointed remark that appeared to take a jab at past and current leadership styles.
With the APC primaries slated for December 15, the seasoned politician expressed unwavering confidence in his chances of clinching the party’s ticket.
“If we held the primaries today, I’m confident I’d secure at least 90% of the votes. The APC’s strength ahead of 2026 is unquestionable, and with God on our side, we will reclaim Osun for good,” he declared to cheers from supporters.
The declaration event saw a large turnout of APC loyalists and party stakeholders, a development Omisore said signals grassroots enthusiasm for his candidacy.
“This crowd isn’t accidental; it’s the voice of committed party members calling for tested leadership. They want competence, and they want it now,” he added.
Ajibola Famurewa, Director-General of the Omisore Campaign Organisation, described his principal as the standout aspirant in a crowded field, emphasizing that Omisore’s wealth of political experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead.
“Among all the aspirants, Omisore stands tallest in terms of governance experience and leadership pedigree. He’s not just running because he can — he’s running because the people have asked him to,” Famurewa said.

According to Famurewa, the clamour for Omisore’s return to Osun politics began at the ward level and has since gained momentum across the state.
“From rural communities to urban centres, APC members have been calling for someone with a firm grasp of the issues. That’s why Omisore is stepping forward — to answer that call and bring Osun back on track,” he concluded.
As the countdown to the 2026 election begins, all eyes are now on the APC primaries, where Omisore hopes to emerge as the party’s standard-bearer in a race that promises to reshape the future of Osun State politics.
