Obiageli Ezekwesili Joins Club de Madrid as Advisor, Strengthening Global Democratic Efforts

Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, an influential voice in governance and education reform in Nigeria, has been appointed as an advisor to the Club de Madrid—an elite international platform of former Presidents and Prime Ministers from democratic countries. The announcement, made via the organization’s official X account, welcomed her with admiration and gratitude.

The message read: “On behalf of all of us, thank you @obyezeks for joining @ClubdeMadrid. Your leadership, vision, and commitment to democratic values are deeply appreciated. We are honoured to count on your voice as we work to advance inclusive democracy worldwide.”

Ezekwesili Affirms Commitment to Global Governance

Confirming the development through her own social media post, Ezekwesili highlighted her acceptance of the invitation and expressed enthusiasm for the goals of the Club de Madrid. “I accepted the invitation to become an advisor to @ClubdeMadrid – the world’s largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers, who leverage their individual and collective leadership experience and global reach to strengthen inclusive democratic practice and improve the well-being of people around the world,” she stated.

She also praised the group’s commitment to addressing international crises. “As our global context becomes even more complex, the leadership vacuum delays solutions to global public ‘bads.’ I therefore deeply appreciate how these former leaders of democracies around the world continue to dedicate themselves to helping solve our global challenges and amplify opportunities for cooperation. Delighted to support,” she added.

Club de Madrid’s Mission and Global Impact

The Club de Madrid, established in 2001, is headquartered in the Spanish capital and functions as a unique alliance of over 100 former democratic leaders from more than 70 nations. Its members dedicate their experience and insights to supporting democratic governance, conflict resolution, and social development across the globe—entirely on a pro bono basis.

Through its initiatives, the Club plays a pivotal role in advising sitting world leaders, fostering constructive political dialogue, and strengthening institutional resilience. Among its hallmark initiatives are the Annual Policy Dialogues and Policy Labs, which provide a platform for exploring innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.

In April 2025, the organization hosted a high-level Policy Dialogue focused on transforming global financial governance frameworks, ensuring they reflect shared democratic ideals and inclusive decision-making. The Club’s President’s Circle further enables robust interaction and peer learning among distinguished world leaders.

Ezekwesili’s Continued Journey in Public Service

Dr. Ezekwesili’s elevation to this global role represents another milestone in a career defined by tireless advocacy, leadership, and reform. During her tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Education, she initiated bold reforms aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of education. Shortly after, in 2007, she was appointed Vice President for the World Bank’s Africa Region—a position that marked her as a key figure in international development policy.

Her work at both national and global levels has earned widespread recognition, including the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) award in 2006 for her exceptional contributions to the nation.

With her deep experience in governance, economic reform, and social advocacy, Ezekwesili’s advisory role at the Club de Madrid is expected to bring valuable perspectives that will help shape democratic policies and promote sustainable development worldwide.
