The Imo State Government has reassured its workforce that the newly announced minimum wage of N104,000 will take effect from August 2025, describing the plan as both achievable and sustainable.
Governor Hope Uzodimma had earlier revealed the wage increase, a declaration that drew widespread attention and skepticism, with concerns raised over how the state would sustain such a policy.
Mr. Oguwike Nwachuku, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Governor, addressed these concerns on Thursday in a televised interview. He argued that the state’s economic transformation has laid the foundation for the ambitious wage hike.
“The government of Hope Uzodimma has invested in building a digital economy and a new template of development,” Nwachuku said. He disclosed that Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue has expanded from below N400 million at the start of the administration to between N3 billion and N4 billion monthly.
He emphasized that this revenue leap resulted from blocking leakages, modernizing governance through technology, and fostering a business-friendly climate.
The government has also invested heavily in infrastructure, with at least 46 new roads completed across the state, which Nwachuku described as proof of fiscal prudence.
While clarifying the payment structure, he noted: “The new wage structure would be implemented with the August 2025 salaries, while consequential adjustments for other cadres of the civil service will be implemented in subsequent months.”
Frontpagenews.ng reports that the new wage is expected to strengthen Imo’s public service morale, potentially setting a benchmark for other states.
