Nigeria’s Federal Government has sounded a fresh alarm over the risk of flooding in parts of the northern region, cautioning residents in vulnerable states and communities to take immediate precautions.
The notice, delivered by the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre, was signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani.
The statement indicated that between August 25 and August 29, 2025, heavy rainfall is expected to trigger flooding in several areas. Affected states and locations include: Adamawa (Abba-Kumbo, Mubi, Shelleng), Bauchi (Azare, Jama’a), Borno (Ngala), Gombe (Nafada), Jigawa (Gwaram), Kano (Sumaila), Katsina (Bindawa, Kaita, Katsina), Sokoto (Makira), and Zamfara (Anka).
The ministry also highlighted the danger of overflowing water from the River Niger. Communities along the river’s floodplain between Jebba and Lokoja have been urged to evacuate urgently. The alert read: “Due to the rise in the water level of River Niger, communities on the flood plain from Jebba to Lokoja are advised to evacuate.”
This update comes shortly after an earlier advisory identified 25 flood-prone areas across seven states between August 23 and 24.
Yobe State remains a cautionary case, as flooding there recently displaced more than 600 residents and affected 102 households in Potiskum. According to the State Emergency Management Agency, the majority of those displaced are women and children, with communities such as Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, and others suffering the heaviest impact.
