Nigeria Introduces Digital Complaint Portal to Combat Real Estate Fraud

The Federal Government has launched a cutting-edge digital portal that enables Nigerians to report fraudulent practices in housing estates, upload supporting documents, and track the progress of investigations in real time.

The new initiative, rolled out by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, was officially unveiled on Tuesday. According to the Ministry, the measure reflects government’s renewed commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s real estate sector.

The platform, known as the Housing Fraud Reporting Portal, is accessible at https://reports.fmhud.gov.ng. It provides a secure and user-friendly system for citizens to submit complaints regarding scams in the housing sector. The Ministry disclosed that complaints will be reviewed in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, professional bodies, and the judiciary.

A statement from the Ministry read: “The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has launched a Housing Fraud Reporting web-based platform aimed at allowing citizens to report incidents of fraud in housing estates. The platform with the sub-domain name https://reports.fmhud.gov.ng, enables users to submit complaints and share relevant evidence and information on fraudulent practices in the real estate sector in the country.”

The launch was accompanied by a live demonstration conducted by two consulting firms, Freestone Investments Limited and Prunedge Development Technologies Limited, who helped develop the digital solution.

In addition to fraud reporting, the Ministry introduced the Contract Performance and Compliance Project Monitoring System, a platform that tracks the progress of housing projects nationwide. This tool evaluates contractors against performance indicators while storing essential documents such as project certificates, payment receipts, and Bills of Quantities.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, explained that the initiative aligns with the 2012 National Housing Policy, which emphasized stricter regulation of the industry, certification of developers, and enhanced citizen protection from fraudulent actors.

He added: “The policy also required an efficient administrative, legal, and regulatory framework to monitor housing delivery and ensure all professionals in the built environment were properly registered.”

Dr. Marcus Amiolemen, Deputy Director and Head of the Ministry’s Information and Communications Technology Department, stated that the fraud-reporting portal was developed in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure that all submitted cases are effectively tracked and acted upon.

Frontpagenews.ng reports that the unveiling of the two platforms signals a decisive move by the Federal Government to restore public trust in the real estate sector and encourage citizens to become active stakeholders in monitoring accountability.
