The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reiterated its dedication to fortifying border security and supporting Nigeria’s economic growth through improved migration management. Speaking at the close of the NIS National Conference in Jos on Saturday, NIS Comptroller-General Mrs. Kemi Nandap emphasized the importance of robust border control for both national security and socio-economic development.
Mrs. Nandap described the conference as an opportunity for NIS and its partners to critically evaluate their readiness to fulfill the service’s responsibilities, identify emerging challenges, and explore innovative solutions. “The conference allowed us to review the current state of NIS and prepare to meet our statutory obligations while identifying evolving challenges in border governance and migration management,†she said.
Key resolutions from the conference included the continued use of advanced technology in border security, focusing on automated visa issuance and passport application processes. Mrs. Nandap elaborated, “We aim to develop a strategic plan aligning with the Federal Government’s goals on Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) and tourism, which will facilitate improved funding.†Additionally, she noted plans to revamp operations at all Divisional Immigration Offices across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas to enhance intelligence gathering and foster stronger relationships with border communities.
Further steps toward modernization include restructuring to foster professionalism, discipline, and patriotism within the service. This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes a responsive and secure immigration framework to support national interests.
Mrs. Nandap also highlighted her commitment to improving personnel welfare, particularly through competitive remuneration and ongoing professional training, to strengthen the effectiveness and morale of immigration officers.
The conference’s closing was marked by remarks from Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Josephine Piyo, who expressed gratitude for the selection of Plateau as the conference’s host, commending NIS’s dedication to bolstering national security and economic growth.
