Nigeria and Brazil Ink Five MoUs as Tinubu Hails Petrobras’ Return Prospects

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has described his official meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Itamaraty Palace as a defining moment in bilateral relations between both countries.

The leaders signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering trade, aviation, scientific research, financial collaboration, and diplomatic ties. Tinubu stressed that the session went beyond courtesy visits, as it delivered concrete action plans. “Our conversations were not mere protocol. They carried purpose and delivered action,” he stated.

A major outcome was the potential comeback of Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil company, into Nigeria’s petroleum sector. Tinubu underscored the significance, saying, “I welcome Petrobras’s potential return to Nigeria. This move will re-energise our oil and gas sector and unlock wider economic opportunities for our people.”

Frontpagenews.ng reports that the two countries also reached agreements to establish direct air travel routes between Lagos and Brazilian cities. Such flights are expected to promote people-to-people exchange, cultural integration, and commerce.

The Nigerian President explained that the agreements would foster technology-driven initiatives, food sustainability measures, and clean energy projects. “From new direct flights between Nigeria and Brazil, knowledge transfer, to joint work in technology, food security, and clean energy, we are opening fresh horizons together, built on a vision of a stronger global south partnership,” Tinubu said.

Concluding his remarks, Tinubu thanked the Brazilian government for its hospitality and brotherhood, declaring: “Obrigado, Brasil, for the friendship, the feijoada, and for proving once again that we share one future across the Atlantic.”
