World Traveler Reflects on Cultural Shocks, Nigerian Pride, and Memorable Experiences Abroad – Lola Margaret

Lola Margaret

I’ve been fortunate to travel to five countries across five continents, including North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Each experience has been rewarding, and I look forward to visiting more countries.

Most Memorable Destination:
The United States tops my list due to its rich diversity—everywhere you turn, you encounter a range of people, foods, and cultural influences. South Africa is another favorite, with its beautiful landscapes, warm people, and excellent wine, especially during the summer.

What Made These Experiences Unique:
In the U.S., I visited 10 cities, each with its own charm, giving me insight into many things often taken for granted elsewhere but considered luxuries in Nigeria.

Most Unusual Food:
I once tried a traditional Arab dish, though I can’t recall its name. I’m open to trying new foods and stepping outside my comfort zone.

What I Miss Most About Nigeria:
While I enjoy traveling, nothing beats the comfort of my bed and home-cooked meals. I also miss my family and friends.

Key Lessons from Traveling:
Every trip leaves me more eager to see the world. I’m reminded of how fortunate I am, and it’s hard to fully appreciate certain places without experiencing them firsthand. These journeys have shown me the value of experiences over possessions, a broader cultural perspective, and the joy of meeting new people.

What I Look for in Each Destination:
Each country has its own unique sounds, smells, and sights that deepen my world perspective. In Dubai, for instance, I admire the modern architecture and stunning landscapes, especially the high-rise buildings and beautiful beaches. As an entrepreneur, I also look for unique items I can bring back to sell, along with some adventure.

Friendships Made Abroad:
Although I’m a bit introverted, I am friendly and approachable when needed, often meeting new people and forming friendships on my travels.

Most Memorable Cultural Shock:
Climate changes can be quite challenging, especially coming from a tropical climate. I had mixed feelings about London, particularly coping with the cold, chilly winters there.

How Welcoming People Are:
I approach every new place with an open mind. People are usually kind and hospitable, though one should be prepared to meet individuals who aren’t as warm.

Recognition of Nigeria Abroad:
Yes, people are often curious when they learn I’m from Nigeria. I’m always proud to share where I’m from, even as we strive to elevate our country’s global image.

Recognition as a Celebrity:
Some people recognize me from Nollywood, though others don’t, which I don’t mind. At times, I enjoy blending in to fully immerse myself in my surroundings.

Experiencing Stereotypes:
Western perspectives on Nigeria are often shaped by news and movies, which don’t always portray us accurately. However, people I’ve met generally have positive impressions of Nigerians.

Most Amazing Tourist Spots:
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting many beautiful places, including the Burj Khalifa, dune bashing and camel riding in the UAE desert, and the Kruger National Park in South Africa, along with various resorts and attractions in the Mpumalanga region. Each experience has been unforgettable.
