Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a urologist in the Department of Surgery at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, was abducted by gunmen on Tuesday evening as he returned home from work.
Kidnapping Incident at Doctor’s Residence
The incident took place at the gate of Dr. Onuigbo’s residence in Nnewi. Witnesses reported that the armed men intercepted him as he was about to enter his home. They forced him into their vehicle, had a brief conversation with him, and drove off. The exact motive for the abduction remains unclear, and no ransom demands have been made so far.
Institutional and Family Responses
A staff member from the university, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident and stated that the institution is aware of the situation and is taking appropriate actions. Efforts are underway to ensure Dr. Onuigbo’s safe return.
The Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the abduction. “Yes, the command is aware of the kidnap. We have already mobilised for the rescue of the doctor. The commissioner, CP Obono Itam, has given orders for this, and men of the command are currently at work,” Ikenga stated.
The family of the abducted doctor is also making efforts to secure his release, as the authorities continue their search for his whereabouts.
