Incident Overview
A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 flight bound for Washington Dulles International Airport made an emergency air return to Lagos on Thursday due to what the airline described as a “technical issue.”

The flight, identified as UA613 and carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff from Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The crew maintained emergency transponder code 7700 until the aircraft landed safely.

Chaos Onboard
Distressed passengers reported a turbulent and shaky flight, with videos and photos showing food and luggage scattered throughout the cabin. Some passengers attributed the pandemonium to an engine-related issue, though the real cause has yet to be determined.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has been tasked with ascertaining the exact cause of the incident.

Details of Injuries
According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), 256 individuals, including 11 crew members, were aboard the flight. While all passengers and crew members disembarked safely, several sustained injuries:

  • Serious Injuries: Four passengers and two crew members.
  • Minor Injuries: 27 passengers and five crew members.

The injured were immediately attended to by FAAN’s rescue team, which included Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, Aviation Medical, and Aviation Security. Ambulances transported the injured to medical facilities, with those requiring urgent care taken to the Duchess Hospital in Ikeja. Others received first aid and were discharged.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures
FAAN confirmed that their rescue team was on alert and prepared within four minutes of the distress signal, ensuring a swift response. The airplane parked safely at Delta 31, and the deboarding process began at 03:37.

In its statement, FAAN assured that the aircraft sustained no major damage and commended the coordinated efforts of the emergency teams.

Passengers’ Welfare
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and United Airlines confirmed that passengers without injuries were accommodated in nearby hotels as stipulated by aviation regulations.

The airline also released a statement acknowledging the situation:
“Flight UA613 from Lagos to Washington D.C. returned to Lagos to address a technical issue. After landing safely, the aircraft was met by first responders to address reports of minor injuries to several passengers and crew.”

Ongoing Investigations
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau will investigate the root cause of the incident, with initial indications suggesting a possible engine issue. FAAN has pledged to keep the public updated on developments.

Commitment to Safety
FAAN reiterated its dedication to ensuring passenger safety and responsiveness during emergencies. The quick reaction of rescue teams and medical personnel demonstrates the effectiveness of safety protocols at Nigerian airports.

A Smooth Return Amidst Challenges
Despite the distressing incident, the safe landing and efficient emergency response highlight the importance of preparedness in handling aviation emergencies. Passengers and crew members are expected to resume their journeys once investigations are complete, and United Airlines addresses the technical issue.
