On the morning of the Ondo State governorship election, the Ugbonla jetty in Ilaje Local Government Area became a bustling hub of activity. Residents utilized the jetty not only as a transit point to their respective polling units but also as a vibrant marketplace.
As voters boarded canoes and boats to reach riverine communities, traders capitalized on the increased foot traffic to conduct brisk business. One trader, identified as Bose, remarked, “People are passing through here this morning and after the election. So we can trade before we go to cast our votes and return after the election.”
The jetty serves as a crucial link between the upland and riverine areas, facilitating movement for both residents and notable political figures. Prominent individuals such as Governor and All Progressives Congress governorship candidate Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Commissioner for Health Dr. Banji Ajaka, and former governorship candidate Chief Olusola Oke were observed passing through the jetty en route to their communities and polling units.
This convergence of commerce and civic duty underscores the jetty’s significance in the daily lives of Ugbonla residents, especially during pivotal events like state elections.
