U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy agreed on Wednesday to collaborate on ending Russia’s war with Ukraine. The White House called their one-hour phone call “fantastic.” This marked their first conversation since a heated exchange in the Oval Office on February 28.

Support for Ukraine and Air Defense Requests

During the call, Zelenskiy thanked Trump for U.S. support. He also requested more air defense systems to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks. Trump responded positively, saying the U.S. would assist in locating the necessary military equipment in Europe.

Trump’s Call with Putin and Ceasefire Attempts

Trump updated Zelenskiy on his recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump had proposed a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine was prepared to accept. However, Putin rejected the proposal, agreeing only to pause attacks on energy infrastructure. This pause was in doubt, with reports of continued attacks from both sides.

Prisoner Exchange Between Ukraine and Russia

Despite the ongoing conflict, both sides managed a prisoner exchange. Each side released 175 troops, with the deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. Moscow also released an additional 22 wounded Ukrainians as a goodwill gesture.

Zelenskiy’s Commitment to Ceasefire and Peace

Zelenskiy called the conversation with Trump “positive, very substantive, and frank.” He confirmed that Ukraine was ready to halt strikes on Russian infrastructure and accept an unconditional ceasefire, as proposed by the U.S. He emphasized that ending attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure could be a key step toward ending the war.

Ukrainian Position on Occupied Land

Zelenskiy also made it clear in a video call with reporters that Ukraine would not recognize any land occupied by Russia as part of Russian territory. This stance was communicated clearly to Trump during their discussion.
