The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Wednesday that Aminu Kanawa, the second-in-command to notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji, has been killed by troops of Operation Fansan Yamma. The DHQ also reported that several close allies of Turji, including his younger brother, Dosso, sustained serious injuries during the operation.
Operation Details and Key Developments
The operation, which took place between January 20 and 21, 2025, also saw the neutralization of several key figures within Turji’s terrorist network. In addition to Kanawa, the military confirmed the death of key commanders, including Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe. Over 24 fleeing terrorists from Turji’s camp were also killed around Gebe and Isa Local Government Areas of Sokoto State, as well as in Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State.
Additional Terrorist Neutralized
The military also reported the elimination of another high-profile terrorist, Suleiman, a loyalist of the late terrorist leader Halilu Sububu. Suleiman was reportedly leading a reinforcement team to rescue Turji’s camp when he was killed in a firefight. This marks a significant blow to Turji’s operations, further destabilizing his group’s fighting capabilities.
Impact on Turji’s Network
The death of Aminu Kanawa and other key figures within the terrorist network is considered a major setback for Turji’s faction, which has been responsible for a series of kidnappings and attacks across the northwest of Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara and Sokoto States. These terrorists were notorious for their violent activities in areas such as Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni.
Ongoing Military Efforts
The DHQ emphasized that the troops are relentless in their efforts to dismantle Turji’s group entirely, ensuring a safer environment for citizens. “Troops operations are aimed at creating an atmosphere of safety and security for all citizens,” said the statement. The successful elimination of several high-ranking members of Turji’s network is seen as a significant step toward curbing the activities of terrorists in the region.
