A devastating accident occurred in Shuwarin town, Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Monday, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and significant destruction. The accident involved a DAF truck, with registration number NGU 498 XA, driven by 34-year-old Mohd Hassan from Potiskum, Yobe State. The vehicle was en route from Yobe to Enugu State, transporting 100 donkeys and passengers.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck lost control and overturned, killing two passengers—45-year-old Innani Abubakar and 30-year-old Kalifa Adamu, both from Potiskum. The driver, Mohd Hassan, sustained severe injuries, including the loss of his left hand, and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano for treatment.
Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Shiisu Lawan Adam, confirmed the incident, noting that approximately 40 of the donkeys being transported died instantly. While investigations are ongoing, preliminary findings suggest that speeding may have contributed to the accident.
The tragic timing of the accident on the community’s market day has left residents in shock and mourning. Community head, Malam Auwal Danbaba, recounted the harrowing moment, describing the loud crash and his grief upon witnessing the aftermath. He emphasized the need for improved road safety measures, including education, awareness campaigns, and stricter law enforcement, as this was not the first such incident in the area.
The Jigawa Police Command has urged all motorists to exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
