President Bola Tinubu is pursuing a strategic partnership with Google to drive Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation and cloud adoption, aiming to position Nigeria as a leading digital economy in Africa.
Tinubu disclosed details of this initiative on Wednesday via his verified X handle, following a meeting with Google and Alphabet CEO, Sundar Pichai, in France. He described the discussions as a pivotal step in advancing Nigeria’s role in AI and digital transformation.
“Nigeria is poised to take the lead in AI and technology—this is merely the start of an exciting journey!” Tinubu stated.
Key Focus Areas of the Google-Nigeria Partnership
According to Tinubu, the proposed collaboration with Google will focus on five critical areas:
- Enhancing scalable cloud infrastructure to support Nigeria’s digital economy
- Equipping the Nigerian workforce with future-ready digital skills
- Promoting AI innovation and research in key sectors
- Driving cloud adoption across businesses and government institutions

Tinubu highlighted Awarri Technologies as an example of Nigeria’s promising AI prospects. The Federal Government is collaborating with the company to build AI software infrastructure tailored to Nigeria’s needs.
Aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda
The partnership aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes economic diversification through industrialization, digitization, and innovation.
“This initiative will empower businesses, create new opportunities, and establish Nigeria as a significant player in the global digital economy,” Tinubu stated.
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy will oversee the collaboration, while the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will lead the implementation.

Following the discussions, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the meeting as a critical milestone in advancing AI skills and innovation in Nigeria’s key sectors.
“Extremely productive conversations with President Tinubu and Pichai today, which underscore our commitment as a government and Google’s ongoing support towards developing Artificial Intelligence skills and innovation in critical sectors in Nigeria,” Tijani said.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai also affirmed his commitment to supporting Nigeria’s AI development and expanding digital skills in the country.
“It was a great meeting with President Tinubu. We talked about the immense potential of AI in Nigeria and how we can partner to expand AI skills, enable innovation, and support Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem,” Pichai said.
