World Environment Day (WED) is observed globally on June 5 of each year to honor and encourage environmental sustainability and awareness. Every year since 1974, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has organized this event, which aims to raise global awareness and inspire action to safeguard the environment and the planet.
“Only One Earth” is this year’s theme, with an emphasis on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature.” It encourages everyone, everywhere, to live sustainably while bringing attention to actions related to climate change, the environment, and pollution. As the operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and CNL joint venture (NNPC/CNL JV), Chevron Nigeria Ltd (CNL) is committed to preserving the environment and delivering ever-cleaner, more affordable energy. As such, it identifies with this global effort to save the planet.
In addition to operating in accordance with all applicable laws, stakeholder expectations, and best industry standards, CNL also conducts business in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner and has included environmental stewardship into its social investment initiatives.
According to CNL Chairman and Managing Director Rick Kennedy, the company’s dedication to environmental preservation, employee empowerment, and consistently achieving the correct results characterizes its sustainable business model.
“Chevron is pleased to contribute to the global environmental issues we operate in every region we serve. Our environmental and energy transition initiatives center on reducing our operational carbon intensity, developing low-carbon businesses, endorsing thoughtfully crafted climate policies, managing water resources responsibly, protecting biodiversity, and managing risks through the use of our Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS).
He claims that in terms of process safety, environmental protection, efficiency, dependability, and personal safety and health, the company’s OEMS performs better than any other in the business.
The cornerstone for effective environmental management is laid by our environmental philosophy and procedures. Through responsible design, development, operations, and asset retirement, the organization protects the environment during its whole lifecycle,” he said.
Reducing its environmental impact and supporting ecosystem restoration are priorities for CNL. By applying its Environment Risk Assessment and Management (ERAM) procedure to identify, assess, mitigate, and manage environmental risks, environmentally related community health risks, and environmentally related social risks, the company continuously strives to achieve world-class environmental excellence.
