The Taraba State Government has announced the temporary closure of Danbaba Suntai Airport in Jalingo to facilitate ongoing upgrade projects aimed at modernising the facility. The closure, approved by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), took effect immediately and will last until December 20, 2024.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation Development, Kwantar Genesis, the government outlined the importance of the closure to ensure the safe and timely completion of several construction works that began in January 2024. These projects include:

  • Installation of drainage systems.
  • Construction of a perimeter fence.
  • Upgrading the Instrument Landing System (ILS).
  • Extending the runway from 2.4 km to 3 km.
  • Procuring two new fire tenders.

Kwantar emphasised that the airport upgrade reflects the state government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure. He noted that the improved facilities will benefit not only commuters within Taraba State but also foster stronger connections to neighboring states.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience this closure may cause, but these efforts aim to ensure a safer and more efficient travel experience for all,” he said.

Kwantar assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to complete the projects on schedule and appealed for patience during the upgrade period.
