A tragic incident occurred on Thursday at the Government Girls Science and Technical College in Potiskum, Yobe State, where a yet-to-be identified student lost their life after parts of a classroom block collapsed.
How the Incident Happened
The collapse reportedly took place during class hours while several students were standing in the corridor of the classroom. According to a report by Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the roof of the building suddenly caved in, trapping students beneath the debris.
An unconfirmed number of students also sustained injuries in the collapse. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, working alongside school officials to evacuate the trapped students and provide first aid.
Response from Authorities
The injured students were rushed to a specialist hospital for urgent medical treatment. The Yobe State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Abba Adam, and the Executive Secretary of the State Science and Technical Education Board, Dauda Atiyaye, visited the scene to assess the situation. They also visited the hospital to check on the injured students.
As of the time of this report, the cause of the collapse remains unknown, and authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the structural integrity of the affected building.

Explosion at Chemical Market in Zamfara
In a separate incident, an explosion rocked the Chemical Market in Talata-Mafara, Zamfara State, on Tuesday, causing injuries to 50 individuals.
The explosion was reportedly triggered by the careless disposal of a cigarette remnant mixed with gunpowder, leading to a massive fire outbreak. The extent of property damage and the condition of those injured are yet to be fully determined.
