Six people lost their lives while one sustained injuries in two separate road accidents in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday and Friday. The incidents occurred at Idi-Ose Bus Stop on the new Ibadan/Oyo Expressway and the General Gas area near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) Filling Station on the Ojoo/Iwo Road.
The first accident took place at midnight on Thursday at Idi-Ose Bus Stop in Akinyele Local Government Area. The sole victim, a motor boy traveling with a trailer carrying cows, died after the vehicle veered off the road. Eyewitnesses reported that the motor boy, who was seated at the back of the trailer, was asleep when the vehicle suddenly swerved, causing him to fall and fatally hit his head.
The second accident happened around midnight on Friday at the General Gas area opposite the NNPCL Filling Station in Ibadan North East Local Government Area. A commercial Nissan Micra car carrying five passengers collided with a long truck. All five passengers in the car died in the crash.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the identities of the victims in the Friday incident remain unknown. Their bodies were retrieved by emergency responders and taken to an undisclosed morgue in Ibadan.
Oyo State’s Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Sector Commander, Rosemary Alo, confirmed the incidents and provided details. She said, “The accident at the General Gas area involved 12 people—five died, one was injured, and six escaped unhurt. The accident on Thursday at Idi-Ose claimed one life.”
Alo added that the injured victim from the Friday accident was taken to Metrol Hospital by the police before FRSC personnel arrived. The accident vehicle was subsequently towed to Akobo Police Station, Ibadan.
The FRSC commander urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules and avoid route violations to prevent such tragedies.
