The quiet community of Orozo, bordering the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State, was thrown into turmoil on Sunday, January 12, 2025, after a man, identified as Oluwatimileyin Ajayi, was apprehended carrying the decapitated head of his girlfriend in a polybag during a church service.

Incident Unfolds During Thanksgiving Service

The shocking event occurred at a local church during a thanksgiving service marking the end of a seven-day fast. The church’s General Secretary and Bible Study Teacher, Caleb Umaru, recounted the chilling series of events.

“It was almost the end of the service, around 11 a.m., during the final prayers, when a church member, Brother Victor, noticed a man walking suspiciously near the river close to the church,” Umaru said. The man, later identified as Ajayi, was carrying a bag that raised suspicions.

Victor alerted another church member, Brother Amos, and they found Ajayi sitting at the back of the church. Upon confrontation, Ajayi threw the bag into the shallow river before denying that he had discarded anything.

Intervention by Bikers

The situation escalated when two bikemen arrived, claiming they had traced Ajayi from a neighboring town, Loko-Tiye. One of the bikemen recounted that he had noticed blood dripping from Ajayi’s bag and decided to track him down after Ajayi abruptly alighted near the church.

Confronted by the bikemen and church members, Ajayi was pressured to retrieve the discarded bag. However, before opening it, he fled. “It took the grace of God for the four men to catch him. They pursued him into a bushy area where he was eventually subdued,” Umaru explained.

The Grim Discovery

After Ajayi was captured, the bag was opened, revealing a decapitated human head. The discovery horrified the community and church members, many of whom had gathered to witness the unfolding drama.

Ajayi, already injured and weak from the struggle, admitted to killing his girlfriend during an argument. According to him, the fight began after he saw her chatting with another man on her phone. “He said they struggled, and she cut his hand with a knife. He claimed he took the knife and stabbed her in the neck,” Umaru narrated.

Ajayi also alleged that a woman had instructed him to bring the head, although he refused to disclose further details.

Police Intervention and Investigation

A police officer was called to the scene, but reinforcements took over 30 minutes to arrive. Ajayi, who was nearly unconscious from the injuries sustained during his capture, was transported alongside the decapitated head to a police van.

Umaru commended the efforts of the police but lamented the delay in their response. “The police eventually arrived, carried his body into their van, and took the head for further investigation,” he said.

Community and Online Reactions

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and horror both within the Orozo community and online. Graphic videos and images of the suspect and the decapitated head circulated widely on social media, with many calling for swift justice.

Netizens identified Ajayi as a gospel singer, a claim confirmed by Umaru, who stated that a friend from Lagos mentioned Ajayi’s background in gospel music.

Unanswered Questions and Ongoing Investigations

The police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, including the alleged involvement of a third party who reportedly requested the head. The motive behind the killing and the identity of the woman Ajayi referenced remain unclear.

Calls for Vigilance and Justice

The tragic event has highlighted the need for heightened security and vigilance within communities. Church leaders have urged members of the public to remain cautious and report any suspicious activities to authorities promptly.

“We are deeply saddened by this horrific event, but we are thankful that it was brought to light. We must continue to work together to ensure such acts do not happen again,” Umaru said.

The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation and pledged to bring all those involved to justice. Meanwhile, the Orozo community continues to grapple with the shock of this gruesome crime, hoping for answers and closure in the days ahead.
