Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central senatorial district, has been recognized as “Politician of the Year” in the 2023 Leadership Excellence Awards. This prestigious honor highlights her resilience and dedication in overcoming the challenges faced by women in Nigerian politics, culminating in her historic election as Kogi State’s first female senator.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s journey to the National Assembly was marked by significant political and legal battles. Her political career began in 2019 when she ran for the Kogi Central senatorial seat under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and later contested for governor against incumbent Yahaya Bello, both under challenging circumstances. Undeterred by these initial setbacks, she re-entered the political scene in 2023 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), determined to represent her constituents in the Senate. Backed by strong grassroots support, she secured the PDP ticket and went on to contest against Abubakar Ohere of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking her as a formidable candidate in the Kogi Central senatorial elections.
The 2023 senatorial elections saw Akpoti-Uduaghan facing unprecedented obstacles, including alleged efforts by the Kogi State government to hinder access to her district through disruptions to local infrastructure. Despite these challenges, Akpoti-Uduaghan remained resolute, ultimately securing a narrow victory with 52,132 votes over her opponent’s 51,763—a margin of just 369 votes. Initially declared defeated, Akpoti-Uduaghan challenged the outcome, which led to a landmark victory at the election tribunal on September 6, 2023. The tribunal’s ruling was later upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on October 31, solidifying her place in the Senate and dismissing her opponent’s petition.
The newspaper Leadership lauded Akpoti-Uduaghan for her bravery, describing her as a “proven amazon” in Nigeria’s political circles. Her achievements, it noted, serve as a powerful example for aspiring female leaders and embody the adage that “fortune favors the brave.” Her political ascent, particularly in a climate where women face steep barriers, has been a source of inspiration for many.
Raised in Ihima, Okehi local government area of Kogi State, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s journey has been shaped by her diverse cultural heritage. The daughter of a Nigerian father, Dr. Jimoh Abdul Akpoti, and a Ukrainian mother, Ludmila Kravchenk, her path to leadership exemplifies resilience and dedication to public service. With a background in law and an MBA in Oil and Gas Management from the University of Dundee, Akpoti-Uduaghan is known for her commitment to social justice and community empowerment.
Her recognition as Politician of the Year is not only a celebration of her achievements but also a testament to her role as a beacon of hope in Nigerian politics. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s story reflects her resolve to overcome obstacles, fight for justice, and create a legacy that inspires women and future leaders across Nigeria.
