Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno South in the National Assembly, voiced strong views on Tuesday regarding the treatment of minors arrested for their alleged involvement in August’s #EndBadGovernance protests. Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ndume argued that the minors deserve compensation rather than rehabilitation.

Ndume’s statement comes in response to a presidential directive issued on November 4, 2024, which ordered the release and rehabilitation of all minors detained during the protests.

“These minors shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place. This isn’t a matter of rehabilitation; it’s a matter of compensation,” Ndume emphasized. “Their rights were breached, and they have been wronged. The government should apologize and compensate them to help them rebuild their lives. That would be more appropriate than placing them in rehabilitation programs.”

The senator also reminded the public of President Tinubu’s history of advocating for democracy, suggesting that his administration should uphold the values that align with the people’s expectations. “Tinubu, as someone who has fought for democracy, shouldn’t support actions that conflict with the will of Nigerians,” he stated.

Regarding the grounds on which the minors were arrested, Ndume stressed the importance of considering their age. “I’m not saying they’re entirely blameless, but these are minors,” he concluded, advocating for a fair and compassionate approach to their treatment.
