His resignation was confirmed in a statement released Tuesday morning, March 26, by the Chief of Staff to the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.).
This development follows the recent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the federal government’s appointment of a new state overseer.
Administrator Appreciates Nwaeke’s Service
Vice Admiral Ibas accepted Nwaeke’s resignation and publicly thanked him for his short-term contribution.
The Sole Administrator described Nwaeke as dedicated and professional during his brief time with the new administration.
“The office of His Excellency, the Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (retd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas CFR, is saddened to announce the resignation of the Head of Service, Dr George Nwaeke,” the statement read.
“His Excellency appreciates the immense contributions he has shown this administration in the short period he served and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” it added.
Resignation Signals Continued Restructuring
This resignation adds to the ongoing political reshuffle since the state’s leadership changed hands.
Nwaeke served under the suspended Governor Fubara and was one of the highest-ranking civil servants in the state.
His decision to resign comes amid a wave of exits and appointments under the new federal-backed leadership.
Analysts believe the change reflects efforts to align the civil service with the vision of the Sole Administrator.
Professor Ibibia Worika Appointed as SSG
In another statement released the same morning, Vice Admiral Ibas announced a new appointment.
He appointed Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika as the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG).
The statement described Worika as a highly qualified individual chosen through a rigorous selection process.
“His Excellency is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika as the new Secretary to the Rivers State Government,” the announcement said.
Worika Brings Strong Credentials to the Role
The new SSG holds wide-ranging experience across academia, international law, and policy advisory roles.
The Sole Administrator highlighted Worika’s long-standing record of excellence in both national and international spaces.
“Professor Worika’s distinguished career spans academia, international legal practice, and high-level policy advisory roles,” the statement added.
His appointment takes immediate effect and reflects the Administrator’s goal to work with trusted, experienced professionals.
Leadership Prioritizes Peace and Progress
Vice Admiral Ibas emphasized that this appointment supports the federal goal of restoring stability in Rivers State.
He called on all citizens and public servants to embrace the ongoing changes and contribute positively to the state’s future.
“Professor Worika’s appointment reflects our commitment to harnessing the great human capital of Rivers people,” the Administrator said.
“We aim to achieve the much-needed peace, stability, and security in the state,” he added.
More Changes Expected in the Coming Weeks
With this new appointment and Nwaeke’s exit, the Sole Administrator appears focused on reshaping the leadership structure.
Observers expect more appointments and resignations in the days ahead as the new leadership asserts control.
The Rivers State Government remains under federal oversight while Governor Fubara remains suspended.
Vice Admiral Ibas continues to take charge of the administration while ensuring governance moves forward without interruption.
